1. 1xRTT
Short for "single carrier (1x) radio transmission technology", 1xRTT is a 3G wireless technology based on the CDMA platform. 1xRTT has the capability of providing speeds of up to 144 Kbps.
2. AVL (Automatic Vehicle Location)
Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) is the technique of using a navigation system, such as GPS, to automatically determine a vehicle’s geographical position.
3. CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access)
CDMA is a channel access method that allows numerous signals to occupy a single transmission channel, optimizing the use of available bandwidth. This allows several users to share a bandwidth of different frequencies.
4. EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution)
An upgrade in the GSM family, EDGE is a digital mobile phone technology that increases data transmission rates and improves performance of GSM/GPRS networks.
5. EV-DO (Evolution Data Optimized)
EV-DO (also known as EV-DO Rev 0) is a communications standard for the wireless transmission of data through radio signals, typically for broadband Internet access. EV-DO supports an "always-on" connection, similar to DSL. EV-DO delivers peak download data speeds above 2 Mbps (1000 Kbps typical), peak uploads at 144 Kbps (50-100 Kbps typical) and has been adopted by many CDMA mobile phone service providers.
EV-DO Rev A is an upgrade capable of slightly faster download speeds (3.1 Mbps peak download, 1-2 Mbps typical) as well as significantly faster upload speeds (1.8 Mbps peak upload, 300-500 Kbps typical).
6. GSM (Global System for Mobile communication)
GSM is a digital wireless system that uses a variation of TDMA (time division multiple access) to digitize and compress data. It then sends it down a channel with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot.
7. HSPA (High Speed packet Access)
The term HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) refers to a family of high-speed 3G digital data services available to GSM carriers worldwide. The service works with HSPA cell phones, laptops and portable devices with HSPA modems to improve upon the performance of the UMTS protocol. HSPA provides wireless upload speeds of up to 2 Mbps and downloads up to 7.2 Mbps.
8. HSPA+ (Evolved High Speed Packet Access)
HSPA+ is a wireless broadband standard that offers an affordable and incremental upgrade to existing HSPA networks. Upload and download speeds are improved offering wireless upload speeds of up to 5.7 Mbps and downloads up to 21 Mbps.
9. SMS (Short-Message Service)
The process of sending short data messages to and from mobile phones and devices.
10. Telematics
Telematics refers to the integration of wireless communication devices and Global Positioning System (GPS) for sending, receiving and storing information over vast networks. Integrating these devices into vehicles provides remote engine diagnostics, stolen vehicle surveillance, roadside assistance, etc.
11. Telemetry
A highly automated communication process by which data is collected at remote or inaccessible points and transmitted to receiving equipment for monitoring. Telemetry may also include two-way communication for the purpose of remote machine management and control.
